Dr. John D. Callahan
Dr. John D. Callahan grew up in the Strathmore area of Syracuse and later in Manlius, graduating from Christian Brothers Academy in 1972. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame and earned a Doctorate of Dental surgery from Georgetown University. In 1982 he received a post-doctoral degree in orthodontics from St. Louis University and returned to the Syracuse area to join his father’s practice. To differentiate the two “Drs. Callahan,” he was called “Dr. John,” a nickname used by patients and staff to this day.
Dr. John is actively involved in strengthening the orthodontic profession. He is a recent past president of the Northeast Society of Orthodontics (NESO), which includes New York, the New England states and the eastern Canadian provinces. On the national level, he is the trustee to the American Association of Orthodontists representing NESO. He is in line to be president of the American Association of Orthodontists.
Dr. John and Callahan, Flanagan, Smith and Stock Orthodontics are recognized as leaders in providing excellent care and service to the Central New York community. This was recently highlighted when Dr. John was named a Fellow of the Pierre Fauchard Academy. This highly selective, international Academy recognizes dentists who have shown exceptional professional, community, and societal leadership.
Dr. John has been happily married since 1982 to Elet, a professor emerita of law and public policy at the Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University. His son, Michael, attended Rochester Institute of Technology and is now an entrepreneur in the Rochester area. When Dr. John is not creating great smiles or working with NESO and the AAO, he can be found cheering at the Carrier Dome.
Dr. John truly loves what he does. “Our patients are great people, and our staff is caring and terrific. We create healthy mouths and great smiles and have fun doing it.”
